Exam accommodations

To assist in providing equitable assessment for students with disabilities, the following accommodations may be negotiated -

  • extensions of exam time
  • separate room
  • use of reader, scribe or computer
  • ergonomic chair
  • assistive technology
  • alternative formatting of exam papers
  • alternative assessment

Individual needs

Different types of disabilities will call for different alternative assessment strategies. Even within the same type of disability there are variations between the specific strategies that individual students require. It is not possible to draw up a set of specific procedures which will apply to all candidates with a similar disability, and appropriate arrangements can, therefore, be made only on an individual basis. Disability Resources staff will discuss a plan of reasonable exam accommodations during your registration.

How to change the adjustments

Every student will receive an assessment advice approximately 6 weeks prior to each exam period. This will advise time, date and location of all assessments as well as all approved accommodations. If you need to change or have your accommodations reviewed , please contact us as soon as possible to discuss.

What happens if I break a bone or suffer a temporary disability before my exams?

Students who break a bone or are suffering with a temporary condition that will impact on their studies or exams may be eligible to receive support during their period of incapacity. You will be required to register with Disability Resources before any accommodations can be given. We will endeavour to meet your needs but certain timeframes will apply.

Note: Temporary accommodations must be finalised no later than 10  business days prior to the start of the exam period.

Mid Semester Examinations

Students who are required to sit mid semester assessments will need to advise Disability Resources as early as possible so that any exam accommodations can be organised. (e.g external exam centre, supervisor, scribe, alternative formatting or commence negotiations of special exam accommodations such as computers, A4 prompt sheets etc.)

Please provide details of the of the date of the exam,  name of the examiner and the course name and code (ie CSC1402, Foundation Computing).   We will then notify the exams office of your requirements and arrange to have any assessment materials produced in an alternative format if required.
