Disability Support Workers

Support workers are contracted on a casual basis by Disability Resources to meet the support needs of students with disabilities. They are required to  remain observant of the students rights to privacy and confidentiality. The majority of support workers are currently enrolled students, but graduates and suitable professional personnel may also be engaged.

Responsibilities

Support workers are required to deliver high quality support and provide maximum opportunity for the students full participation, and encourage independant learning so that they can confidently demonstrate their knowledge and skills required of the course.

Some of the common duties that DSW's (Disability Support Workers) perform include:

  • notetaker
  • reader
  • tutor
  • scribe
  • participation assistant

Applications

Your application for the role of support worker will be received throughout the year and interviews may take place relatively soon after placing your application or at another suitable time. All suitable applicants will be kept on a database for future reference when matching students for support.

If you are interested in registering your details please forward to the Disability Resource Officer, your current CV and a covering letter outlining any previous experience in the area of disability and what demonstrated qualities you have that will assist you in this role.  

How many hours will I need to work?

The requests for support vary throughout the academic year with primary need being during semester one and two, but there are some opportunities for work during the summer semester. Depending on your availability you may be required to work anywhere from 2-20 hours per week.

If you have a period where you are unavailable, simply notify the Disability Resource Officer so that a replacement can be organised for the period you will be away.

What to do if you experience any problems with a student that you are supporting.

If at any time you are experiencing any problems or need independant advice, you are welcome to discuss the matter with the Disability Resource Officer or Coordinator,Disability Resources.
