What does a librarian do?

Far from sitting around reading books and shushing people in the library, a Librarians’ job is diverse and includes a wide range of duties. A big part of a Librarian career is collection development – selecting, sourcing, and organising literary and media items. Librarians also help patrons with finding materials, referencing and research. Additionally, they are often involved in the development of  programs that promote lifelong learning, literacy, and cultural awareness.

Is a career as a librarian right for me?

A career as a Librarian is suited to someone who is passionate about literature and highly organised. Other skills and attributes beneficial for this role include:

  • a very high attention to detail 
  • proficiency with technology
  • strong communication skills
  • good interpersonal skills
  • the ability to work independently and as part of a team 
  • excellent reading and comprehension skills.
