What does a photographer do?

Document events in history and capture precious moments in time as a professional Photographer. Broadly, careers in photography call for technical skill but also creative thinking – the ability to photograph something with precision and clarity, but also to create art. The scope for creativity will vary depending on the type of photography you chose to specialise in; for example a Sports Photographer will capture action shorts whereas as a Wedding Photographer can give direction to set up the image the way they want. Many photographers choose to have their own business and pursue freelance photography. Photography careers involve working with a wide range of talent in a variety of locations such as studios, events, corporate workplaces, or nature.

Is a career as a photographer right for me?

If you love thinking creatively but also enjoy mastering a technical skill, you might be interested in a photography career. Other skills and attributes beneficial for this role include: 

• strong communication skills, including the ability to give direction  
• good interpersonal skills  
• a high attention to detail  
• the ability to work independently and part of a team  
• an eye for composition and design.
