RATIONALE:

This unit exists to satisfy the need for flexibility within a course in order to cater for the widely varying interests and chosen specializations of students.


SYNOPSIS:

This unit provides the opportunity for a student to pursue an area of study which will complement the other studies in the course. Typically the unit will consist of specialized investigations extending knowledge and skills in a certain area. The studies could involve, for example, a directed reading course, study of a complementary unit, approved by the examiner, extension of the project (where appropriate), or some other approved activity which would complement the student's studies in the course.


OBJECTIVES:

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate knowledge and skills in the complementary study area.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

The complementary study area chosen will be assigned by
consultation with the appropriate Course Coordinator.
Where appropriate, students may be directed to a certain
complementary study, or in other cases they may be asked
to nominate an appropriate study.
Assessment of the unit will be carried out in a manner
which is suitable to the chosen study.
The assessment details will be agreed upon by the
Examiner, the Moderator and the student will be advised
of the details in writing .
The unit will be assessed in accordance with University
Policy and Guidelines,
i    In accordance with the times specified in the
     academic calendar, all students shall be evaluated
     on their attainment of the objectives of the course
     and of the units in which they are enrolled.
ii   The system of evaluation shall indicate if the
     student has met the objectives of the unit, and may
     indicate levels of attainment.
iii  Only the Registrar may issue official result
     certificates and academic histories.
iv   The appropriateness of assessment instruments used
     in achieving the stated objectives of units shall
     be moderated, and shall be externally
     moderated as deemed appropriate by the Dean.
v    Students are expected to exhibit honesty and ethical
     behaviour in undertaking assessment requirements of
     units.  The University regards attempts to circumvent
     assessment requirements as a very serious matter.
