RATIONALE:

A substantial programme of research will be performed by the student, the prime purpose being to give the student experience in carrying out biological research.


SYNOPSIS:

This research project will be based on experimental work conducted either within the University or elsewhere in conjunction with a government or private organisation. The project, supervised by a member of staff with appropriate expertise, will consist of pure or developmental research in an important area of biology.


OBJECTIVES:

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. give the student practical experience in the performance of original research in biology.
  2. expose the student to real-world practical problems and the limitations these place on scientific advances.
  3. give the student an opportunity to work in a research team.

TOPICS:

  1. The details of the experimental work to be performed will obviously vary with each individual project. However, the student will be expected to perform original research under the supervision of a senior scientist from the place at which the research is being carried out. If this is not the USQ, regular progress reports must be submitted to a second supervisor who will be a USQ staff member.

Such journals, monographs and other printed materials appropriate for
the research topic chosen.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Three  typed  copies of the research thesis, presented in  the  format
typical of post-graduate theses, must be submitted to the examiner  of
this unit by the end of Semester 2.
In accordance with University policy and Guidelines,
i    an  Examiner  may  grant  an extension of  the  due  date  of  an
     assignment in extenuating circumstances;
ii   no  assignments  will be accepted for assessment  purposes  after
     assignments  or  model  solutions have been  released  except  in
     extenuating circumstances;
iii  assignments  submitted after the due date without any extenuating
     circumstances  will  attract a penalty of  at  most  20%  of  the
     assignment mark for each working day late;
iv   students who submit an assignment after the due date and wish  to
     claim   extenuating   circumstances,  must  provide   documentary
     evidence with the assignment explaining the circumstances;
v      the  unit  examiner  shall consider  a  claim  for  extenuating
     circumstances and decide on the outcome;
vi   the  decision of the Dean shall be final in any dispute that  may
     arise in the implementation of these guidelines.
