This unit extends the concepts met within the unit "Linear Systems and Control" to cover more sophisticated applications. In particular, the following points are considered : (i) In all but the most basic control problems, computers out perform any other type of controller. In the first instance, a computer control loop may be designed by means of a simple extension of the classical techniques for continuous systems. (ii) State space descriptions are generally more efficient than transfer function algebra in the description of complex systems. (iii)Many real systems will display non linear characteristics to a degree which is not accurately described by small signal linear models.
On mastering this unit, the student should be able to exhibit competence in the :

1 In order to complete this unit successfully a student must
normally obtain 50% of the marks in both the individual
assessments and overall.
2 If students submit assignments after the due date without
extenuating circumstances then a penalty of up to 20% of the
assignment total marks will apply for each working day late.
3 Attendance at residential school is compulsory for this unit.
4 It is the policy of the Faculty of Engineering and Surveying NOT
to accept submission of assignments by facsimile or email.
Students in remote locations who do not have regular access to
postal services may be given special consideration.
