Synopsis

The  unit is designed to draw upon the existing strengths of students,
particularly  in  the  field  of  oral communication,  and  to  assist
students to further develop both existing and new skills in all  forms
of  communication.   Emphasis  will be placed  on  the  importance  of
developing competence in a wide range of written communication  forms,
particulary those with application to student needs.  This is intended
to  be  a  very  flexible  unit which recognises  the  wide  range  of
individual skills and competencies present in each student  and  which
builds  on this foundation, to a level which will provide each student
with the necessary communication tools to successfully participate  in
tertiary studies.

The  essence  of the unit lies in its deliverate attempt to  recognise
the  depth and breadth of experience and expertise that students bring
to the teaching/learning interface.  The necessary tertiary skills are
simply another set of skills which have application in this particular
environment.
