Synopsis

The  unit  is  based on an explanation of ecological principles  as  a
basis  for  Australian land-based production systems.  The effects  of
population growth on land use for agriculture, mining, forestry, water
catchments,  tourism  and  residential  expansion  are  analysed   and
explained.    Environmental   impacts   are   studied   and   compared
economically, ecologically and socially.  Biodiversity and the role of
women  in developing new community values are given special attention.
Alternative land use plans are evaluted in terms of their contribution
to a sustainable Australian society.
