Synopsis

The first half of this unit emphasises the diagnoses mechanisms of
pathogenesis and prevention of significant microbial diseases of
animals and humans. The diseases covered include those caused by
readily gram-stained organisms such as gram-positive and gram-negative
cocci, gram-positive and gram-negative rods and not readily gram-
stained organisms such as non-obligate and obligate intracellular
parasites. The second half of the unit will cover basis of antigenic
specificity, induction and basis of humoral and cellular immune
response, immunoglobulin structure and function, immune system and its
role in health and disease, cytokines, cell-mediated immunity and
hypersensitivity reactions, autoimmunity, vaccinology,
transplantation immunology and cancer immunology.
