Synopsis

Important features of mathematical modelling as a process are studied
in this unit. A limited amount of new material is introduced in
mechanics and then formal aspects of modelling are examined and
applied to a wide range of topics. The main emphasis of the unit is
on the process of model building, although important associated
aspects of problem solving are also included. Applications of finite
differences, calculus, optimization, statistics and computing are
developed.
