Synopsis
Agriculture is based essentially on the green plant and a knowledge of
plant biology and plant physiology is fundamental in understanding
agriculture. This unit includes major topics and important processes
and principles such as photosynthesis, respiration, plant
anatomy, plant taxonomy, growth, water and plants, reproduction,
germination, hormone response, and environmental influences on plant
growth.
It is essential that agricultural engineers should have an
understanding of the principles and processes of agronomy (broad
hectare crop production), horticulture (production of fruit and
vegetables), and agristology (pasture science) which together form
much of the basis of Australian agriculture. Furthermore it is
essential that they also understand animal husbandry associated with
cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry. The unit concentrates on processes
amenable to engineering technology such as pest control, heat balance,
and animals and their environment.
