Synopsis

Soil is the medium for plant growth and is a natural resource worthy
of conservation. Accordingly, soil is of fundamental importance to
agriculture, and it is essential that agricultural engineers
understand the principles of soil science regarding soil as a medium
for plant growth, and considering soil management, soil conservation,
and soil and water management and irrigation. The principles of
pedogenesis, taxonomy, chemistry, physics, microbiology, biology, and
fertility of soils are included in a cohesive presentation. The
science and technology of soil erosion and salinity, and their
development and correction, are discussed. Soil amelioration, soil
management and landcare issues are also treated in this unit.
