Synopsis

This  unit  is  intended for the budding geomechanical specialist.  It
seeks  to  introduce the student to the latest techniques  in  certain
major  areas  of  geotechnical engineering.  Areas  currently  at  the
forefront  of geotechnical knowledge and included in the unit  include
the  use  of  statistical and numerical techniques, the  modelling  of
stress  and  strain in soil, the interaction of soil with  structures,
and  ground  subsidence.   The student will be  required  to  use  the
knowledge  gained  in  the undertaking of a major geotechnical  design
project.
