Synopsis

The engineering design sequence includes definition, value and
criteria  selection; generation of proposals; analysis  of  proposals;
selection of design; and development of details of a particular design
selected.

While the main thrust of this unit will relate to the structural
design of specific schemes, some attention will be given to the
conceptual phases preliminary to arriving at a suitable structural
system appropriate to the loads, clear spans, height, environmental
conditions, etc. applicable to the project.

The engineering features for past practice design solutions will be
examined via documented case studies of selected notable as built
structures and during field trips.

The principles involved in non standard loading situations will be
studied as well as the means to model their influence on structural
behaviour.
