Synopsis
The unit draws on concepts and techniques derived from psychology,
educational philosophy, educational sociology and curriculum
methodologies in analysing issues related to the nature, organisation
and presentation of knowledge in various social contexts of schooling.
By requiring students to extend their knowledge of lesson planning to
long term and full school planning situations, a fuller picture of the
life of the teacher as a curriculum decision maker in a school and
community context is developed.
A major focus of the unit is the increasingly professional role of
teachers in an expanding educational context which includes the
classroom and extends to the school and the local community. State
and national influences on local schooling practices are also
considered. In pursuing these objectives, the unit uses the small
rural school as a focal point against which both new and old
assumptions about schooling are tested.
