Synopsis

It is important that students majoring in studio practice have an
understanding of some of the issues related to professional
practice in the Visual Arts. This unit encompasses the dual
concerns of drawing, as a means of visually creating, recording and
solving production process, and aspects of business
administration essential to successful practice. Selected aspects of
the unit, Issues in Professional Development, will underpin
theoretical aspects of this course. This unit is structured to
support, complement and strengthen individual studio practice
specializations. It will provide students with a basic
understanding of commercial, legal and administrative aspects of the
profession while also continuing to extend exploration of perceptual
concepts through drawing. These concepts will supply information and
procedures to prepare the artist and craftsperson to function
competently and professionally in a visual arts career. Criteria
involved in making sound aesthetic decisions will be reviewed as will
the role of art criticism and theory and its relevance to the
development of the positive concepts of a personal philosophy through
research and analysis. Where appropriate, there will be occasional
input provided by visiting arts professionals involved in arts practice
and the arts industry, as well as specialist staff within the
University.
