Synopsis

It is essential that students aiming to be Surveyors and students in the
Bachelor of Technology (Civil Engineering) develop a knowledge of elementary
surveying theory, methods and instrumentation.

This knowledge can be regarded as the base layer, in the case of surveyors, upon
which further skills can be built; or in the case of engineers a layer of skills
for reference.

This unit introduces students to hand held surveying instruments, theodolites
and automatic and engineering levels.

Instruction is given in the theory and use of this instrumentation.

Students are also instructed in techniques of linear measurement, surveying
traverse calculations, volumetric calculations and tachymetric surveying.
