RATIONALE:

Overseas students planning to undertake research in their post-graduate degrees need to be aware of the philosophy of western research, so that their own work, and interpretation of others' research, is conducted within an acceptable paradigm.


SYNOPSIS:

The "philosophy" of research in western scholarship, different types of research in science and social sciences and statistical terms are introduced. A literature survey, an approach to research questions and project plan are undertaken.


OBJECTIVES:

At the conclusion of the unit successful graduates will be able to:

  • undertake a literature survey;
  • frame research questions;
  • undertake a small piece of research under supervision;
  • write up a brief report based on their research.
