SYNOPSIS:

Teachers not only need theory about second language learning but also need to know how this theory has been translated successfully into practice in the classroom. This unit, in essence, tries to link the theory and practice together. The unit looks at the teaching of the four macroskills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. It also looks at the teaching of vocabulary and grammar so that these two types of activities are situated in a teaching program in their proper place.

OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the unit, students will demonstrate an
understanding of:

  1. the way each macroskill operates by being able to describe
    their operation;
  2. the complex inter-relationships that exist between the
    macroskills by citing research evidence which shows such
    relationships;
  3. the techniques used in classroom in each of the macroskills by
    showing how they are derived from theory and are supported by
    research;
  4. how vocabulary development takes place and discussing the many
    techniques that can be used to enhance such development;
  5. an understanding of the place of grammar in second language
    teaching.
