This unit, in conjunction with 64501, 64502 and 64503, enables students to develop and use research capability and an advanced level of mathematical or computer science skills.

SYNOPSIS:

This unit forms the final part of the research component of the MITSc programme. From the foundation established in 64501 and from the continued development in 64502 and 64503, students will complete a selected project in applied mathematics, statistics or computer science with the supervision of appropriate staff from the Department of Mathematics and Computing.

OBJECTIVES:

On successful completion of this unit students will be able
to:

  1. demonstrate the ability to keep abreast of developments in
    mathematics or computer science;
  2. demonstrate the ability to execute and refine a selected
    research investigation;
  3. demonstrate the ability to develop higher level mathematical,
    statistical or computer science skills which include the
    analysis, synthesis and evaluation of factors involved in the
    investigation of the research topic;
  4. demonstrate the ability to complete an extensive research
    based investigation and to evaluate the results;
  5. effectively document and communicate the results of the
    investigation and the methods used in a dissertation.
