RATIONALE:

All primary school teachers are health educators and teachers of human relationships education during school hours when children are under their care. Not only must they ensure a healthful school environment for all pupils, but they must also provide children with the understanding of concepts, issues and practices which are basic to the development and maintenance of good health. It is a requirement that HRE be part of schooling in all Queensland state schools from preschool to grade 12. HRE is the basis of all learning, is part of all experiences and interactions and is the foundation on which a supportive school environment develops. With the philosophy and approach to learning focused on cooperative, child centred classrooms operating under social justice principles, it is imperative that teachers develop skills and a greater depth of understanding in the area of human relationships.

SYNOPSIS:

This unit focuses on primary school health education and human relationships education. Students will examine the nine Main Ideas in the Queensland Health Education Curriculum Guide and the five key elements of HRE. Students will gain an understanding of curriculum development in health education as well as current approaches to health teaching in primary schools. They will examine the Human Relationships Education Policy and Guidelines Statement and discuss its implications for schools and communities. Increased self- awareness and personal growth will help students understand themselves and their relationships with others as well as develop personal and professional skills to enhance their teaching effectiveness.
