Synopsis

The unit is designed around the acquisition of effective student- life
skills. An emphasis is placed on using effective study and learning
skills as well as utilising stress management and self motivation. A
broad view of the learning process is presented. The investigation
into the psychology of learning integrates the acquisition,
organisation and understanding of learning, study motivation, stress
and personal management. By focusing students' attention on how they
learn, individuals are made aware of present personal competencies and
learning strategies and the need to understand rather than to solely
memorise the work. Regular feedback and discussion helps them form
an understanding of the nature of their own resources, helps them
maintain learning and study objectives and helps them learn in an
intelligent and purposeful way. The course assumes that, if capable
students are made aware of efficient learning and study methods, and
they can be guided to initial and quick success in these matters, they
will subsequently act to optimise their academic performance.
