Synopsis
This unit examines the legal authority of Local Government in
Queensland, including a detailed study of the powers and functions of
local governments. The laws relating to Local Government are changing
regularly through new and amending legislation as well as by decisions
of the Courts. Students will therefore be required to have knowledge
of some case law as well as a large number of statutes, particularly
The Local Government Act 1993. As such, the topics to be covered will
include statutory interpretation, fundamental legal concepts affecting
local government, elections and polls, organisation and proceedings,
local laws, and financial management: It is the legal environment
which is discussed in all of these topics.
