Synopsis

Employment and Industrial Relations is divided into four parts: 1)
Foundations, 2) Parties and Institutions, 3) Industrial Relations
Processes, and 4) Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management.
The first part includes various theoretical approaches to the study of
industrial relations, the economic, legal and social dimensions of the
employment relationship, and a select historical survey of industrial
relations in Australia. The parties and institutions in industrial
relations are studied in the second part of the unit. Modules deal
with management and industrial relations as well as employers'
association, trade unions, the role of the state in industrial
relations and Australian industrial relations tribunals. The latest
developments in federal industrial relations legislation are dealt
with here. Part 3, Industrial Relations Processes, studies conflict
and conflict resolution, collective bargaining and the evolutionary
changes to industrial relations in Australia during the 1980s and
1990s. The unit concludes with a module which challenges perspectives
on the relationship between HRM and industrial relations and concludes
that HRM is a managerial strategic option within industrial relations.
