Synopsis
This unit focuses on Human Resource Management as a dynamic process
responding to changes in technology, product markets and business
strategies. It adopts a macro perspective and examines some of the
drivers of change.
The unit consists of three overlapping parts. First, the nature and
drivers of organisational change and restructuring are examined. This
leads to a consideration of the relationship between organisational
strategies and HR policies. Second, current issues in HRM are
identified, particularly the new organisational structures emerging as
a result of strategies such as downsizing and delayering. What are the
implications of such strategies for innovation? Thirdly, Japanese
management strategies are examined as management systems which appear
to handle change and innovation more successfully.
