Synopsis

The first section of this unit will examine the history of Language
and Literacy teaching. This will provide students with a theoretical
base which will enable them to critically analyse and interpret
current and future trends in language and literacy education. An
analysis of the various components of current syllabus documents
including drama will conclude this section of the unit.

The second section will focus on the development and acquisition of
language, particularly children's writing abilities and the associated
skills of spelling, handwriting, punctuation and grammar. The
structure of various genres, the reading and writing processes and the
purpose of writing in other curriculum areas will form the basis of
this section. The relationship between the oral and written modes of
language will be studied.
