RATIONALE:

This course aims to encourage and stimulate students' interest in, and appreciation of a variety of types of literature. Part of the process of learning to enjoy and appreciate literature involves the ability to successfully evaluate a writer's work.


SYNOPSIS:

Successful evaluation involves the development of the following skills: 1 identification of the writer's purpose in presenting his/her work; 2 the ability to relate issues in the set texts to the society in which each text is set; 3 exploration of the role played by characterisation; 4 examination of the role played by the genre chosen by the writer.


OBJECTIVES:

On successful completion of this unit students should
demonstrate the following skills:

  1. accurate identification of the writer's purpose in each of the
    set texts;
  2. the ability to relate issues in the set texts to the society
    in which each text is set;
  3. an exploration of characterisation in the texts;
  4. an awareness of the role played by the genre of each of the
    texts.
