RATIONALE:

To develop confidence in the use of more academic English, both in the oral and written forms.


SYNOPSIS:

1. Speaking 5 hours per week X 13 weeks = 65 hours 2. Listening 5 hours per week X 13 weeks = 65 hours 3. Reading 6 hours per week X 13 weeks = 78 hours 4. Writing 6 hours per week X 13 weeks = 78 hours 5. Self-access 3 hours per week X 13 weeks = 39 hours


OBJECTIVES:

On completion of this unit, the student should be able to:

  1. carry out all the basic social activities and be able to use
    oral English for more academic purposes also
  2. read newspapers, magazines, novels, letters to editors etc.
    and some academic writing with understanding
  3. show mastery of vocabulary required for social purposes as
    well as elementary academic purposes
  4. write complex sentences with few errors
  5. use a wider range of connectives in both oral and written
    forms that are appropriate to academic contexts
  6. apply study skills to time organisation, researching materials
    and preparing talks
  7. compare, evaluate, give opinions, criticise both orally and in
    writing
