RATIONALE:
To develop confidence in the use of more academic English, both in the
oral and written forms.
SYNOPSIS:
1. Speaking 5 hours per week X 13 weeks = 65 hours
2. Listening 5 hours per week X 13 weeks = 65 hours
3. Reading 6 hours per week X 13 weeks = 78 hours
4. Writing 6 hours per week X 13 weeks = 78 hours
5. Self-access 3 hours per week X 13 weeks = 39 hours
OBJECTIVES:
On completion of this unit, the student should be able to:
- carry out all the basic social activities and be able to use
oral English for more academic purposes also
- read newspapers, magazines, novels, letters to editors etc.
and some academic writing with understanding
- show mastery of vocabulary required for social purposes as
well as elementary academic purposes
- write complex sentences with few errors
- use a wider range of connectives in both oral and written
forms that are appropriate to academic contexts
- apply study skills to time organisation, researching materials
and preparing talks
- compare, evaluate, give opinions, criticise both orally and in
writing
