RATIONALE:

This unit is a supervised research project which provides opportunities for motivated and highly qualified students to undertake advanced study and to produce a research-based dissertation. Students develop the appropriate research skills and specialist area knowledge which will enhance their career prospects or allow them to undertake further studies. The emphasis of the course will be on developing the appropriate knowledge and skills to undertake independent research and professional practice.


SYNOPSIS:

This is the second of two units that contribute to the MSc dissertation. The unit will consist of continuation of the research project started in Biology Masters Project A. Data acquisition and analysis will be completed and a dissertation prepared for examination.


OBJECTIVES:

On successful completion of this unit students will be able
to:

  1. demonstrate their ability to think analytically, critically
    and creatively about a chosen research topic and related
    issues within the area of specialisation chosen;
  2. demonstrate competence in each component of empirical research
    procedures, viz; identify and analyse research problems,
    formulate hypotheses, operationalise research procedures,
    collect relevant data, carry out appropriate analysis of data,
    interpret results obtained, and draw appropriate conclusions.
  3. Competently write a report of a research project to
    communicate all aspects of the project to professional peers.

Procedures  associated  with  the assessment  of  this  unit  will  be
consistent  with those contained in Sections 4.4.1, 4.6 and  4.6.1  of

at  least  one seminar reporting on their project work is a  necessary
requirement for students to gain passing grades in this unit.
