Practice units seek to develop basic competencies and attributes commensurate with the intuitive and professional skills sought in engineering graduates. This unit provides a broad introduction to the practical aspects of surveying, geology and soil and water engineering and focuses on the development of analytical, manual, diagnostic, communication and group interaction skills.
The unit is subdivided into practice modules covering aspects of SOIL, WATER, GEOLOGY and SURVEYING. Practice requirements for each module include laboratory work, practical sessions, field excursions and report preparation. Laboratory sessions provide a broad introduction to the measurement and analysis of the engineering properties of soil and water. Practical sessions in surveying are designed to develop the manual and analytical skills required to conduct simple levelling, chaining and theodolite traverses. The field excursion provides the student with specialised instruction on the identification and the engineering significance of geological features. Modules may be undertaken in any order subject to any pre and/or corequisite unit requirements, offer availability or otherwise the approval of the respective Assistant Examiner.
On successful completion of this unit students will be able

1 Students attending the residential school must attend at least
80% of the required practical and/or residential school sessions
for a passing grade to be awarded in this unit (see notes).
2 The only final grades awarded in this unit are Pass (P) or Fail
(F) grades.
3 A minimum standard of communication skills must be demonstrated
in order for a passing grade to be achieved.
4 If students submit assignments after the due date without prior
approval then a penalty of up to 20% of the assignment total
marks will apply for each working day late.
5 In the event that a due date for an assignment falls on a local
public holiday in their area, such as a Show holiday, the due
date for the assignment will be the next day. Students are to
note on the assignment cover the date of the public holiday for
the Unit Leader's convenience.
6 The Faculty of Engineering and Surveying will NOT accept
submission of hand written or typed assignments by facsimile,
email or computer diskette. Students in remote locations who do
not have regular access to postal services may be given special
consideration.
7 Students are required to maintain a Log Book of Engineering
Practice. The log book will provide certified evidence of the
successful completion of each module of the unit and must be
submitted to the respective Assistant Examiner for approval upon
completion of each module.
8 Reports for the SOIL, WATER and GEOLOGY modules and field notes
for the SURVEYING module are to be submitted to the respective
Assistant Examiner for assessment within one calendar month of
completion of the respective practice activities.
9 Where it is practicable to do so, students may undertake the
respective practice activities in their normal place of work or
at some other appropriate venue. Where the practice activities
are completed outside the University, log book entries must be
certified by the workplace supervisor or other person of
authority prior to submission to the relevant Assistant Examiner
for approval.
