This is the first of two units which address, in a generic sense, the practice of professional engineering and professional surveying. The unit is concerned with aspects of the work undertaken, the performance required and the responsibilities borne by the professional engineer and professional surveyor which are essentially independent of the engineering or surveying discipline: to a large extent these are non- technical matters. A major manifestation of this professional practice is the planning, execution and reporting of project work. Hence a major portion of this unit is directed at the preparation for and commencement of your final- year project (unit 70712). This preparation includes attendance at the annual "Project Conference" in which students, both day and external mode, will present their completed project work to the staff of the Faculty and to members of the local industry. The technical matters within this practice unit include the participation in a range of laboratory sessions, demonstrations, seminars and workshops provided both by staff of the Faculty (commonly in relation to elective studies and to staff research work) and by industry. These activities (labelled "Booths") seek to provide the student with some insight into the "cutting edge" of current engineering and surveying practice.
On successful completion of this unit students will be able
to:

1 A student will not normally undertake this unit until he/she is
in the last four (4) semesters of the degree course AND is
commencing or expecting to commence final-level project work
(unit 70712 Project) in this or the following academic year.
2 Achievement of a `pass' grade in this practice unit requires each
of the following: (i) satisfactory participation in the Project
Preparation sessions (Topic 1 above); (ii) satisfactory
participation in the Project Conference (Topic 3 above); and
(iii) submission of Booth Report Logbook I (Assessment 1 above)
containing a satisfactory summary report on each of at least four
(4) Industry/University Booths.
3 Participation in the Project Conference is preparatory to, and
additional to, presentation of a paper at this conference in the
following year.
4 A student who does not or cannot attend the Project Conference
will normally be required to attend and provide a written report
on three (3) technical seminars or equivalent professional
meetings to the satisfaction of the Examiner.
5 A student who does not meet the requirement of four (4)
satisfactory reports within Booth Logbook 1 will be graded IM
(Incomplete-Makeup) in this unit. To upgrade this result the
student may submit the outstanding reports as part of "Booth
Report Logbook 2" to be presented in the following practice unit,
70062 Professional Practice 2.
6 This is a COMMUNICATION BENCHMARK unit and a major component of
the assessment of this unit will be associated with the
demonstration of communication skills.
7 A minimum standard of communication skills must be demonstrated
in order for a passing grade to be awarded.
8 The Faculty of Engineering and Surveying will NOT accept
submission of hand written or typed assignments by facsimile,
email or computer diskette. Students in remote locations who do
not have regular access to postal services may be given special
consideration.
9 In the event that a due date for an assignment falls on a local
public holiday in their area, such as a Show holiday, the due
date for the assignment will be the next day. Students are to
note on the assignment cover the date of the public holiday for
the Unit Leader's convenience.
10 The only final grades awarded in this unit are Pass (P) or Fail
(F) grades.
11 If students submit assignments after the due date without prior
approval then a penalty of up to 20% of the assignment total
marks will apply for each working day late.
