The development of practical musical ability is a fundamental part of any music course; performing ability is the individual's most important avenue for musical expression.
The unit content will embrace both solo and group performance in the student's area of practical performance and the study of works representative of various stylistic periods in that area of literature of music. Each succeeding unit in performance will require students to demonstrate a greater degree of both conceptual and executant skill development.

- TECHNICAL EXERCISES AND REPERTOIRE
- A programme of repertoire materials (including scales, exercises, studies, pieces, etcetera) will be mutually agreed upon by Teacher and Student during the first weeks of the semester. Written copies of this Repertoire List will be retained by the Student, Teacher and Examiner. This Repertoire List will form the basis of both the Student's work for the semester and the assessment examination at the end of the semester. In the event of illness or other unforeseen circumstance, this Repertoire List may be adjusted by the Teacher in consultation with the Head of Music.
- CLASS AND TEACHER CRITICISM OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE
- In addition to the normal weekly lesson, students are required to participate in Master Class and Concert Practice Classes as required by the Teacher.
- PERFORMANCE UNDER CONCERT HALL CONDITIONS
- Students are required to perform at Concert Practice classes, campus Lunchtime Concerts and on other occasions as nominated by the student's principal study teacher.
- PERFORMANCE UNDER EXAMINATION CONDITIONS
- All students are required to present themselves for periodic formal examination; The first of these will take place at approximately the middle of the semester. The second of these formal examinations will be held at the end of the semester, during the official University Assessment period. The Repertoire List, as agreed between the Student, Teacher and Head of Music, will form the basis of this examination.
- ENSEMBLE AND GROUP PERFORMANCE
- Students are required to participate in group musical activities as laid down by the Head of Music. All the first level students are required to sing in the USQ Singers. Each student will be required to participate in ensemble activities.
As specified by the Principal Study Teacher and the Director of
various ensemble groups into which the student has been placed.

1 Students are required to attend ALL lessons, concert practice
sessions, rehearsals, master classes, concerts and other
performances and activities (including ushering duties) as
required by the Head of Music. Absence will be permitted only in
the case of illness or by prior arrangement with the staff member
concerned. Each unauthorised absence will incur a penalty of 5%
of the total marks allocated to the unit.
2 Students are required to have passed both the solo performance
and ensemble modules before an overall pass in the unit can be
awarded.
