RATIONALE:

This unit explores the potential relationship between art and society within the Australian socio-political context. Particular emphasis will be placed on the adaptation of models developed outside of Australian theatre practice in order to explore their appropriateness to the economic, social and political conditions prevalent in this country.


SYNOPSIS:

Focussing primarily on the theories and methodologies developed by Augusta Boal in Latin America, students will explore the relevance and appropriateness of Theatre of the Oppressed as a model suitable for adaptation by Australian communities generally and Australian university students in regional Australia in particular.


OBJECTIVES:

On successful completion of this unit students will have:

  1. a detailed understanding of the principles of theatrical
    production in a particular area of theatrical practice;
  2. a high standard achievement in the application of these
    principles, in both practical and written form;
  3. a strong working knowledge of basic performance skills
    associated with this particular area.
