Synopsis

The unit commences with an overview of the small business sector: its
definition, size, importance, problems and the assistance available to
new and ongoing entrepreneurs and managers. Factors contributing to
the effective commencement of a venture are outlined, including
attributes of successful entrepreneurs, start up needs and
considerations, and the prior planning necessary. Finally, factors
contributing to the effective daily management of a small business are
examined.

A practical orientation is maintained throughout, with case studies
discussed and a major project involves students in a detailed
feasibility study for a possible new venture.
