Synopsis

This unit extends the concepts met within the unit "Linear Systems and
Control" to cover more sophisticated applications. In particular, the
following points are considered:

(i) In all but the most basic control problems, computers out
perform any other type of controller. In the first instance, a
computer control loop may be designed by means of a simple
extension of the classical techniques for continuous systems.

(ii) State space descriptions are generally more efficient than
transfer function algebra in the description of complex systems.

(iii) Many real systems will display non linear characteristics to a
degree which is not accurately described by small signal linear
      models.
