STAFFING:

Examiner: A. PARISI
Moderator: B. CARTER

RATIONALE:

A knowledge of the concepts of physics is fundamental to the understanding of the mechanisms used widely in modern science. This unit provides necessary physics for future professionals, for example, scientists, doctors and teachers.

SYNOPSIS:

This introductory unit provides students with an understanding of basic physics principles. This knowledge will be further developed in later units. Applications of physics are provided along with problem solving and practical exercises. This unit is intended for students wishing to undertake the GAMSAT test and other professional careers.

OBJECTIVES:

On successful completion of this unit students will be able
to:

  1. demonstrate a basic knowledge of physics principles with
emphasis on measurement, electrical theory, stress, strain,
temperature, pressure, heat, fluid flow, waves, optics, atomic
    and nuclear physics.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

1 Students are required to actively participate in at least 80% of
the workshops and practical classes in this unit, including
     submission of assessment items.
2 The final examination consists of two parts, restricted and open.
The restricted part is worth 21% of the marks for the examination
and the open is worth 39%.
3 All laboratory reports are due at the BEGINNING of the next
practical session to which the student has been assigned. A 10%
penalty will apply up to 5 pm of the due date.
4 Assessments will be criteria based and continual. Certain
criteria must be met in order to attain a pass. Therefore 50%
does not necessarily constitute a pass, neither will the grade
attained from individual assessments necessarily equal the final
     grade.
5 In accordance with University's Assignment Extension Policy
(Regulation 5.9), the examiner of a unit may grant an extension
of the due date of an assignment in extenuating circumstances.
This policy may be found in the USQ Handbook, the Distance
Education Study Guide and the Faculty of Sciences' Orientation
Handbook for new on-campus students. All students are advised to
study and follow the guidelines associated with this policy.
6 Restricted Examination: a restricted examination is an
examination where only those materials specified in the
examination paper are permitted during the examination.
7 Open Examination: an open examination indicates that the
candidate may have access to any material during the examination
except the following: electronic communication devices, bulky
material, devices requiring mains power and material likely to
     disturb other students.
