SYNOPSIS:

These days most engineering tasks require a "system approach". Knowledge, design skills, theory, (computer) tools etc will have to be combined in a systematic way to complete a complex task. This unit is a practical introduction to this approach. Elementary building blocks and theory covered in previous units will be combined to design and develop more complex systems. Team work often goes hand in hand with a systems approach, hence working in teams will be an essential part of this unit. Systems that will be covered include: . Structural systems, such as concrete beams and steel trusses. Teams of students will have to design, build and test their own beam and truss systems (the team that built the strongest structural system will receive a symbolic prize). . Road design using Moss software. . Water and sewerage systems.

OBJECTIVES:

On successful completion of this unit students will be able
to:

  1. Structures
  2. Traffic and transport
  3. Water and sewerage treatment
