Examiner: J. BILLINGSLEY
Moderator: B. FULCHER

SYNOPSIS:

In mechatronics, mechanical, electrical and computing elements are combined to form an integrated whole. This unit includes elements of advanced dynamics and the devising and testing of mechanisms. Digital controllers for embedding in mechatronic systems will certainly require the use of software with interrupt structures, while control theory is necessary for analysis and design of the entire closed-loop system. This unit will round off the formation of a mechatronics engineer.

OBJECTIVES:

On successful completion of this unit students will be able
to:

  1. devise or select sensors for measuring the motion of a dynamic
    system;
  2. describe and devise mechanisms for achieving particular motion
    requirements;
  3. select and interface sensors for system control;
  4. interface vision signals to a computer and be familiar with
    methods of processing them;
  5. analyse a dynamic system in terms of discrete time equations;
  6. analyse systems in a discrete-time format suitable for the
    application of computer control and investigate the
    application of such control.
