SYNOPSIS:

The practice unit is intended to provide students with an insight into the operations of a typical GIS software package. Various aspects including designing a GIS, data capture (including photogrammetry and remote sensing), data analysis and output will be examined.


OBJECTIVES:

On successful completion of this unit students will be able
to:

  1. Describe and operate an industry standard GIS software
    package.
  2. Understand the various stages and processes involved in
    establishing a small GIS.
  3. Undertake a small GIS project including the design, capture,
    analysis and output of final results.
  4. Present the results of GIS projects in a professional manner.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

1    Attendance  at  a minimum of 80% of practical and/or  residential
     school  sessions is compulsory for a passing grade to be  awarded
     in this unit.
2    The  only final grades awarded in this unit are Pass (P) or  Fail
     (F) grades.
3    If  students submit assignments after the due date without  prior
     approval  then  a  penalty of up to 20% of the  assignment  total
     marks will apply for each working day late.
4    A  minimum  standard of communication skills must be demonstrated
     in order for a passing grade to be achieved.
