RATIONALE:

There is world-wide focus on issues relating to the health and nutrition of young children. Maintaining healthy and hygienic environments for young children, particularly children being cared for outside the home, is a top priority. It is important that early childhood educators, who are often responsible for the care and education of young children from birth, understand the importance of maintaining healthy environments and are capable of planning and implementing appropriate health and nutrition programmes for children birth-8 years.


SYNOPSIS:

This unit will identify and respond to health issues which have recently been identified as important considerations for early education, including national and state based standards and regulations, infectious diseases, injury prevention and nutritional requirements. It will also focus on other issues such as AIDS education, abused children, immunisation and the development of protective behaviour programmes for young children.


OBJECTIVES:

On successful completion of this unit students will:

  1. be familiar with the regulations in Day Care and other Early
    Childhood services relating to Health, Safety and Nutrition.
  2. be able to create and maintain a healthy and safe physical and
    emotional environment for young children.
  3. be able to identify and respond to important issues in the
    area of Health Education including common infectious diseases,
    AIDS, the abuse of children, hospitalisation, and nutritional
    requirements.
  4. be capable of creating Protective Behaviour Programmes in
    relation to child abuse.
  5. have knowledge of the importance of balanced nutrition
    programs for young children.
  6. be competent at designing interesting and appropriate
    nutritional programs.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

1    When  there  is  more  than  one marker  for  a  single  item  of
     assessment, the distribution patterns and means for the different
     markers will be compared and marks adjusted if necessary.
2    Marking   criteria  are  provided  in  unit  material   as   mark
     sheets/guides or as part of assignment specifications.
3    Summative  assessment  items will be  given  a  numerical  score.
     Ungraded summative assessment will be given either Pass, Fail  or
     Incomplete.
4    Unit Grades will be calculated by aggregating the weighted result
     or  numerical  score  for  each summative  assessment  item.  Any
     ungraded  assessment requirement will receive  a  Pass,  Fail  or
     Incomplete.
5    All  assessment  items  must  be attempted/submitted.  Assessment
     items must be passed overall. Ungraded summative assessment  will
     be given either Pass, Fail or Incomplete.
6    If  assignments  are  submitted after the  due  date  without  an
     approved extension of time, a penalty of 10% of the mark  awarded
     by  the examiner for the assessment item will apply for each  day
     late.
7    80%  attendance at workshops or tutorials is needed to fulfil the
     requirements  of this unit. Attendance sheets must be  signed  at
     each workshop or tutorial. Failure to reach the required level of
     attendance will result in failure of the unit.
