SYNOPSIS:

This unit provides students with an introduction to the history, theory, texts and practice of music theatre and music drama. CONDITIONS APPLY: Students intending to enrol must consult the examiner (W Dowd) at the beginning of the academic year (or earlier) in which it is planned to enrol, in order to organize subscription to Opera Queensland performances.


OBJECTIVES:

On successful completion of this unit, students will have:

  1. a basic knowledge and understanding of the history, theory,
    texts and practice of music theatre and music drama;
  2. an awareness of how various types of music theatre and drama
    have contributed to the development of the western theatre
    tradition.

  9. Romantic Opera - Italy and Germany.

  10. Verismo - late 19th century.

  11. 20th century: Janacek, Stravinsky, Weill, Britten

  12. Operetta, Gilbert & Sullivan, music hall, Vaudeville.

  13. Form, structure and conventions of musical comedy.

  14. Contemporary opera/musicals.
