Synopsis

The purpose of this unit is to introduce students to the complexities
of conducting business on the international arena. Whilst the
discussion is limited to accounting issues, rather than general
business operation, the student should still acquire an appreciation
of the latter. In the last decade economic policy in this country has
been tied to Australia becoming an intentionally competitive trading
nation. The decision to invest or trade overseas, or to utilise
overseas finance is a complex one. This unit identifies many of the
relevant accounting issues which impact on such decisions. The unit
provides a cross-country comparative review of the diversity of
international accounting practices. Contemporary issues in
international accounting are identified and the consequences for
financial statement analysis and decision making are discussed. The
unit also describes and analyses the multinational corporation as an
organisational form, economic and social force. Further, international
harmonisation of accounting practices is described and the factors
which drive harmonisation are identified
