Synopsis
This unit examines the nature of exceptionality and outlines the
historical developments in UK and USA which have shaped special
education services in Australia. The major part of the unit comprises
a comprehensive study of the physical, social, and emotional
characteristics of students with intellectual impairment, learning
disabilities, emotional and behavioural disorders, communication
disorders, sensory impairments, and physical impairments.
There is also a section on the exceptional needs of students who are
gifted and talented. Approaches to classroom intervention and support
form an important part of each section of this unit.
