STAFFING:

Examiner: N. HANCOCK
Moderator: D. DOWLING
Instructional design: C. COTTMAN

SYNOPSIS:

This is the first of two units which address, in a generic sense, the practice of professional engineering and professional surveying. The unit is concerned with aspects of the work undertaken, the performance required and the responsibilities borne by the professional engineer and professional surveyor which are essentially independent of the engineering or surveying discipline: to a large extent these are non- technical matters. A major manifestation of this professional practice is the planning, execution and reporting of project work. Hence a major portion of this unit is directed at the preparation for and commencement of your final- year project (unit 70712). This preparation includes attendance at the annual "Project Conference" in which students, both day and external mode, will present their completed project work to the staff of the Faculty and to members of the local industry. The technical matters within this practice unit include the participation in a range of laboratory sessions, demonstrations, seminars and workshops provided both by staff of the Faculty (commonly in relation to elective studies and to staff research work) and by industry. These activities (labelled "Booths") seek to provide the student with some insight into the "cutting edge" of current engineering and surveying practice.

OBJECTIVES:

On successful completion of this unit students will be able
to:

  1. commence project work in a professional manner, ie. by means
    of appropriate general planning;
  2. draw up a specification of activities within a project, resources
    requires, realistic timelines and conduct a safety audit for the
    project;
  3. establish contacts and interact appropriately with senior
    (supervisory) staff;
  4. establish contacts and interact appropriately with support (technical
    and administrative) staff both within and beyond your technical
    discipline;
  5. find and use information resources at an advanced level;
  6. appreciate and evaluate the role of the professional conference in
    information exchange; and
  7. appreciate and evaluate industry displays and presentations.
