This unit provides the student with important music skills which supplement Performance units. Important elements in the development of a musician are aural awareness and a knowledge of music writing techniques.
This unit provides practical instruction and practice in the use of tonal harmony. It also facilitates aural acuity relating to pitch, melody and rhythm. Each succeeding Music Craft unit further develops this acuity.
On successful completion of this unit students will have:
Description Weighting(%)
- MODULE A - WRITING TECHNIQUES 50.00 Traditional harmony in four parts, covering diatonic harmony, unessential notes, suspensions and fixed progressions using Second Inversions; the Dominant 7th chord and Secondary Triads.
- MODULE B - AURAL TRAINING 50.00 This module develops aural acuity relating to pitch, melody and rhythm. Pitch work deals with formation and recognition of scales and modes, and with a sequential development of interval recognition. Melody work deals with mostly stepwise movement; while rhythm work fosters an ability to think in rhythmic units, and to develop a shorthand notation so that four-bar rhythms can be notated rhythmically, accurately and quickly.
