Synopsis

This unit introduces students to the management of people as the human
resources of an organisation and to the management of the employment
relationship. It combines theory and the practical application of that
theory. Recognition is given to the fact that many organisations do
not conduct human resource management in accordance with the suggested
theoretical framework. Students examine the HRM functions associated
with the determination, acquisition, development and ongoing
management of the human resources of organisations. Within this
context, students examine the challenges posed to the management of
the employment relationship by the contemporary environment of
organisations. Students will also examine the suggested future
direction of the management of the employment relationship into the
new century. Upon completion of this unit, students should have an
overall appreciation of HRM. This unit is prerequisite for the HRM
majors.
