Synopsis

This unit is designed to allow current business leaders and business
leaders in training to reflect on and hone their self-leadership
competencies. The first module focuses on the task of establishing a
career identity in the turbulent times in which we live. New notions
of tenure of employment and emerging conceptions of the career are
explored and traditional understandings vigorously challenged. It is
assumed that leadership of the self is the essential way to achieve a
career ideal. Notions of personal competency in leadership are
presented. Mentorship is then discussed as a powerful and viable
action strategy for acquiring leadership competencies and attaining a
career ideal. The assessments in the unit are learner driven action
projects in which students have the opportunity to integrate the
content in the unit to transform it into something from which both the
student and their organisation can profit. The assessments are
leadership-in-practice experiments.
