Synopsis
This unit explores the nature of the arts as individual disciplines,
as well as examining them in the light of the total curriculum.
Students will be introduced to the changes that have occurred over the
years in the approaches to the arts in early childhood education, and
reflect upon the philosophical and practice implications of these
approaches. The unit explores the visual arts, music, drama,
storymaking and telling as symbolic languages through which young
children express their thinking. It also explores ways in which early
childhood professionals can guide children's artistic expression
through each of these arts areas, as well as in integrated ways.
