Synopsis

This unit will consider a number of theories about play, including
learning theory, and will introduce students to ways of enhancing
children's play, across all curriculum areas in an integrated way. To
this end, play-based programs will be explored, in particular, how
early childhood professionals can observe play to gain insights into
children's thinking, interests, fascinations and feelings.
Furthermore, students will be challenged to consider how teaching
interactions and environments can support and develop children's play.
Implications for programming and evaluating play are consequently
explored. Practicum experiences will be in kindergartens and
preschools.
